Beginnings
Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas. From a young age, she exhibited a strong sense of adventure and a fascination with airplanes. Earhart's passion for flying was ignited when she attended an air show in 1920, where she took a 10-minute plane ride that changed her life. Prime Years
Earhart’s career took off in 1928 when she was invited to become the first woman to fly across the Atlantic as a passenger. In 1932, she achieved her goal of flying solo across the Atlantic, from Newfoundland to Ireland, in just under 15 hours. This feat earned her the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress, the Cross of Knight of the Legion of Honor from France, and the Gold Medal of the National Geographic Society.
Beyond her transatlantic flight, Earhart set numerous aviation records. In 1935, she became the first person to fly solo from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Oakland, California, demonstrating the potential of long-distance air travel.
