Beginnings
Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator, best known for his voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, which opened the way for the widespread European exploration and colonization of the Americas. His expeditions, sponsored by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, are considered a significant turning point in world history.
Prime Years
Columbus's first voyage began on August 3, 1492, with three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. On October 12, 1492, he and his crew landed on an island in the Bahamas, which he named San Salvador. Believing he had reached the East Indies, Columbus referred to the indigenous people he encountered as "Indians." His subsequent voyages further explored the Caribbean and parts of Central and South America.
Columbus made a total of four voyages to the New World between 1492 and 1504, each expanding European knowledge of the Western Hemisphere. Despite never finding the coveted passage to Asia, Columbus's expeditions had profound implications, leading to the widespread exchange of goods, ideas, and cultures between the Old and New Worlds, an event known as the Columbian Exchange.
